A Year with Frog and Toad, coming to the Smith Center for the Arts

Feb 02nd, 2017

Arnold Lobel's treasured characters hop from page to stage in a story of friendship and adventure in Casa Mañana’s production of A Year with Frog and Toad, coming to the Smith Center for the Arts as part of the ArtSmart Series Thursday, February 16 at 10:00 AM and 7:00 PM. The 10:00 AM is sold out.

A hit on Broadway, A Year with Frog and Toad was nominated for three Tony Awards – including Best Musical. Based on Arnold Lobel's well-loved books, and featuring a hummable score by Robert and Willie Reale, this whimsical show follows two great friends – the cheerful, popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad – through four fun-filled seasons.

Waking from hibernation in the Spring, Frog and Toad plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, go sledding and learn life lessons along the way. The two best friends celebrate and rejoice in the differences that make them unique and special. Part vaudeville, part make believe... all charm, A Year with Frog and Toad tells the story of a friendship that endures throughout the seasons.

“A fun evening, sure to entertain children and adults alike.” – TheatreMania

The jazzy, upbeat score of A Year with Frog and Toad bubbles with melody and wit, making it an inventive, exuberant and enchanting musical, perfect for introducing theatre to youngsters while keeping adults entertained, as well. This Theatre for Young Audiences version features a shortened running time and doubling options, allowing for a cast of five, which makes it a great option for theatres with touring programs or strong educational components.

“Robert and Willie Reale solidly capture the essence and heart of Lobel’s characters and stories. Robert Reale’s music is infectious, colorful, and rich in melody and character whereas Willie Reale’s lyrics are both witty and funny… provides plenty of fun and creativity for children and plenty of nostalgia and heart for the adults.” – Chicago Theatre Beat
