WGI repave earns National Asphalt Pavement Association ‘Quality in Construction' Award

Mar 21st, 2017

The repaved racing surface at Watkins Glen International has been the recipient of many compliments since its unveiling at a pre-season ceremony nearly one year ago.

Another endorsement recently came from the National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) in the form of a “Quality in Construction Award”, recognizing “excellence in asphalt pavements for 2016.”

NAPA’s Awards Program presents special opportunities for recognizing and encouraging excellence. The program continues to expand new categories. Recipients are recognized for their contributions to a job well done.

“We’d like to thank the National Asphalt Pavement Association for the distinction,” said Watkins Glen International President Michael Printup. “The praise for this repaving project has been overwhelmingly positive since our ribbon-cutting last April. Teams, drivers, and of course, the fans, have been thrilled with the results, just as we have at The Glen and International Speedway Corporation.”

WGI’s first repave since 1998 kicked into high gear one day after Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race winner Joey Logano broke ground during his post-race festivities. Some 25,000 tons of asphalt and 10,000-plus labor hours later, The Glen had a surface that would soon become the fastest road course in North America.

Governor Andrew Cuomo and the State of New York awarded Watkins Glen International $2.25 million to assist in modernization effort and repaving the historic facility in December 2014.

Watkins Glen International received the award after being named a Priority Project by the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council (STREDC) earlier that year.
