School's Out! Spring Break Art Activities at the Rockwell Museum

Corning, NY, March 10, 2017 - Need some spring break ideas? The Rockwell is your destination for authentic, un-plugged family playtime during Spring Break and always! Happening all week, The Rockwell Museum school’s out activities are every day, Monday, April 10 through Friday, April 14, 2017. Artmaking workshops begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 12 p.m. & 1 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Space is limited so pre-registration is encouraged and can be made online at www.rockwellmuseum.org/events.

 

Monday: Alexander Calder Inspired Mobile

Alexander Calder Inspired Mobile – Create your own kinetic sculpture inspired by American artist Alexander Calder and see one of his mobiles on view in the special exhibition, “Modernist Masters, Contemporary Icons: Highlights from the Old Jail Art Center.”  Paint, draw and cut out geometric shapes to hang and balance from wire.

 

Tuesday: Clay Box Landscapes

Clay Box Landscapes – Sculpt, shape and mold clay in a box to create an imagined topographical landscape inspired by the majestic landscape paintings on view in The Rockwell’s galleries.  Add details and textures of different landforms by pressing beads, ribbon, pipe cleaners and other materials into the clay. 

 

Wednesday: Sun Discs

Sun Discs – Decorate your own cardboard circular disc with mixed media materials using radial symmetry.  Add symbols, patterns or designs about the spring season, the sun, new growth, the circle of life, fire and light.  Turn your sun disc into a mask by drawing a face in the center.

 

Thursday: Spring Wands

Spring Wands – Make a magical wand to celebrate spring!  Create your own spring-themed designs out of felt, jewels, ribbon and other fun materials.  

 

Friday: Self-guided gallery activities

Visit The Rockwell and explore the galleries on your own.  Spring themed Art Hunts, I Spy and Art Quest will be offered in the galleries all week long – no registration required for gallery activities.
