An Evening with Jimmy Webb

Saturday 11/13 at 8pm

Jimmy Webb

About this event

An Evening with Jimmy Webb

Jimmy Webb, America’s Songwriter, has written songs that transcend generations and genres –think “Wichita Lineman,” “MacArthur Park,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix,” and “Didn’t We.” This Motown-trained composer writes all of his own lyrics and music and is the only hit maker to have scored songs on the Pop, Country, R&B, Rap, Disco and New Age charts. During this Evening with Jimmy Webb, audiences will hear this multi-Grammy Award winner’s songs and experience his insightful and often humorous stories about his work with Glen Campbell, Frank Sinatra, Linda Ronstadt (“Still Within the Sound of My Voice”), Art Garfunkel (“All I Know”), The Fifth Dimension (“Up, Up and Away”), The Highwaymen (“The Highwayman”), Kanye West (“Famous” features Webb’s “Do What You Gotta Do”), and more.

Jimmy Webb is the author of the memoir, The Cake and the Rain, and the “bible” of songwriting, Tunesmith: The Art of Songwriting. In 2019 Webb released a piano-only CD, SlipCover, featuring some of his favorite songs from his contemporaries; Billy Joel, Paul Simon, The Rolling Stones and more.

“… A night with Jimmy at the keys is not unlike getting to hear George Gershwin or Cole Porter live. It’s hard to believe one guy could have written all these amazing songs…if you get a chance to see him live, grab it...”

– Paul Zolo, American Songwriter Magazine

PETER MACK QUARTET

With Chuck Lamb, Harvey Sorgen and Jeff Leaderer

Friday, December 3rd at 8:00pm

Peter Mack has been bringing legendary jazz performances to APT since its inception; this All-Star Jazz Ensemble is no exception.

About this event

Peter Mack’s accomplishments begin from his days as a classical student on viola, through his college years at Berklee College of Music in 1974. He cut his teeth on string bass at Syracuse’s famed Casa Di Lisa and was fortunate to play with visiting musicians, the likes of Sal Nistico, Art Blakey, Walt Weiskopf and Joe DiOrio, just to name a few.

He formed his own group, the MackAttack (a sextet with 3 horns out front) in the 90’s, shortly thereafter meeting and performing with drummer Danny D’Imperio. He then went on to play and record in Danny’s group, The Bloviators. Musicians on the stand included Ralph Lalama and Gary Pribeck.

In 2001, Peter produced Danny’s Big Band Bloviation and recorded with Barry Harris, Peter Bernstein, Eric Alexander and Joe Magnarelli and others. A second recording featuring Lew Tabackin, Gary Smulyn and Greg Gisbert was produced. In the last few years, he has teamed up with drummer Harvey Sorgen, who was instrumental in introducing him to a new cast of musicians, including Chico Freeman and Chuck Lamb.

Chuck Lamb’s performance history is extensive. He has been with the Brubeck Brothers Quartet for 20 years, performing with them and his own groups at major festivals and concerts across the globe. He has shared the stage with musical legends such as Ray Charles, Pat Metheny, Freddie Hubbard and McCoy Tyner.

More recently, Chuck has released a number of highly acclaimed CDs and has played with many renowned artists, including Dave Brubeck, Bela Fleck, the Woody Herman Orchestra, Ernestine Anderson, Eddie Daniels, Dave Holland, “Cream” drummer Ginger Baker, Bennie Maupin (Herbie Hancock), Peter Frampton, David Benoit, Kenwood Dennard, Richie Cole, Larry Coryell, Terrell Stafford, Ernie Watts and principal members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Detroit Symphony and Albany Symphony. He is also a professional touring musician and prolific composer…

Peter Mack and Chuck Lamb will open the show with selections from their new CD.

Jeff Lederer is a saxophonist/clarinetist/composer who has been included in the Downbeat Critics’ and Readers’ poll every year since 2014. He leads ensembles including the “Shakers n’ Bakers”, “Sunwatcher Quartet,” and “Brooklyn Blowhards.” He is also the founder and director of the Visionary Youth Orchestra. Lederer plays in the groups of Matt Wilson, Bobby Sanabria, Allison Miller, Jimmy Bosch and others. Lederer was named as a “Musician to Watch in 2017” by JazzWise magazine in London and has appeared in the North Sea, Molde, Monterey, Chicago, Earshot Seattle, Azores and Guimaraes Jazz festivals where he was the 2017 artist-in-residence. Lederer is currently serving as Director of Jazz Studies and professor of Jazz Saxophone at Long Island University.

Harvey Sorgen’s career has spanned over 40 years. He has performed on over 100 records toured internationally. The diverse range of artists Harvey has performed and/or recorded with include: Hot Tuna, Ahmad Jamal, Michelle Shocked, Paul Simon, Dewey Redman, Warren Haynes, Dave Douglas, Mark Feldman, Pete Levin, Zakir Hussain, Tony Levin, Giovanni Hildago, Wadada Leo Smith, Cameron Brown, Neil Rolnick, Anthony Braxton, Carter Jefferson, John Stubblefield, Bruce Hornsby, Brenda Bufalino, Honi Coles, Daunik Lazro, Derrick Trucks, Roswell Rudd, Phil Lesh, David Torn, The Memphis Pilgrims, Bill Frisell, Fonda/Stevens Group, Carlos Santana, Dry Jack, NRBQ, Bob Weir, Greg Allman, Marcel Monroe, The Mallards, Sorgen-Rust-Windbiel Trio, Ben Monder, Jay Anderson, Dave Samuels, Drew Gress, Garth Hudson, Jimmy Vivino, and more.
