This month, the Davis Gallery at Houghton House will unveil a new art exhibition, “Theory and Practice,” featuring 33 pieces by 30 different artists. The opening reception will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 24.
The exhibit attempts to make sense of the diverse catalogue of styles that proliferate in contemporary art, from Conceptual Art to Post Modernism. The art will display a topical and thematic narrative, beginning with abstract art of the 1960s and 1970s, moving onto contested issues of socially aware theories of post-colonialism and globalization, and concluding with 21st century art, concentrating on science and racial issues.
The exhibit will feature works by celebrated artists Josef Albers, Romare Bearden, Leon Golub, Jasper Johns, Henry Moore, James Rosenquist and Kara Walker.
Due to the vast amount of art produced since 1960, the exhibit does not offer a complete timeline, but instead a glimpse into the history of the western art world. The exhibit mirrors an art history course, “Art Since 1960,” taught this spring by Visiting Assistant Professor of Art and Architecture Angelique Szymanek. The pieces on display are from the Collections of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.
After the March 24 reception, “Theory and Practice” will remain open through Friday, April 21.
The Davis Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1:30 – 4:30 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and holidays. For more information on the exhibit call Houghton House at (315) 781-3487.
