Mumford, June 27, 2018—Nobody celebrates Independence Day like Genesee Country Village & Museum.
Who else fires a 100-pound anvil into the sky, something occasionally done at celebrations in 1830s Western New York when there were no cannons to be had?
Who else offers blocks of ice where visitors can help themselves in chipping off pieces for their lemonade?
Few else offer the truly moving moment when some 50 new American citizens take their naturalization oath on the steps of the historic village Town Hall.
And who else, in authentic 19th-century fashion, offers a spirited reading of the Declaration of Independence that sets the tone for the afternoon's festivities?
All this plus parade, picnics, patriotic concerts by the Geneseo Cornet Band, ladies base ball and dozens of other family-friendly activities amidst much pomp, music and merriment that traditionally was part of Independence Day.
The museum is open 10 am-4 pm on Wednesday, July 4. Swearing-in ceremony is at 11 am, concert at 12:30 pm and parade at 1:30 pm.
