Staving Artist Woodwork showcases the original work of Dan Mitchell, a Finger Lakes native whose bona fides include deep experience in the wine industry along with a passion for woodwork. He’s been crafting with wine barrel materials since 2005, creating stunning furniture, fixtures and home accessories. He makes every wooden item sold in our online store as well as our brick & mortar location in Penn Yan, New York, a charming historic village on Keuka Lake in the heart of wine country.
Dan’s designs are a deft combination of rustic and modern, using the gentle curves of barrel staves to create new takes on traditional forms. The wood, often stained a warm red by the wine, comes from local wineries. And while we offer a selection of stock items in our shops, we are especially keen to work with clients on custom projects, from dining tables and chandeliers to personalized signs and plaques. We cherish the collaborative process, and appreciate the feedback we get from delighted customers.
Above all, our satisfaction comes from creating timeless pieces for people who value design, function and environmental sustainability. We use 90% reclaimed materials and minimize waste wherever possible. We partner with local artisans, from metalsmiths to potters, not only to support fellow artists, but also to ensure quality. We are also careful to source natural ingredients for our hand-poured candles and wickedly popular hot sauce.
