Predicting the weather anytime in Upstate New York can prove difficult, but that is especially so in the springtime when temperatures can fluctuate and precipitation fall with little notice. The April 8, 2024 Total Solar Eclipse will be viewable from the Finger Lakes Region and Western New York pending clear skies. However, if the sun doesn't shine that day, you will still see, hear and feel the effects of the eclipse.

During a total solar eclipse, the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light temporarily. If it's cloudy during an eclipse, you may not be able to see the Sun, and thus, you won't directly observe the eclipse. The clouds act as a barrier, blocking the view of the celestial event.

However, there are indirect ways to know that an eclipse is happening even if you can't see it. During a total solar eclipse, the sky can darken significantly, and there may be noticeable changes in the environment, such as a drop in temperature and changes in animal behavior. Birds may return to their nests, and nocturnal animals may become active. You might also notice a 360-degree sunset effect around the horizon.

If you are unable to see the eclipse due to cloud cover, you can still experience some of these indirect effects. Additionally, people often share their eclipse experiences through live streams or online platforms, so you may be able to follow the event virtually if it's being broadcasted. Keep in mind that experiencing a solar eclipse directly is a unique and captivating event, so clear skies enhance the viewing experience.
