Wondering why our New York wines are so good? The perfect and rare mix of good geology and geography. After the receding glaciers carved the immense troughs that are now our gorgeous lakes, they left long sloping hillsides above the waterlines increasing "air drainage," providing optimum grape cultivating conditions. Combine that with latitude, maturity of the vineyards (many generations old), and the expertise of some of the world's best wine-makers, and you have magnificent wines. But you won't be thinking about that as you savor each drop in your glass. You will know however, that you're experiencing something very special.
The Finger Lakes viticultural area, or wine-growing region, is centered around five main lakes—Canandaigua, Cayuga, Keuka, Ontario and Seneca. All five offer organized wine trails to make touring and exploring easier for you. Today, over 90 wineries in the region produce over 100 million bottles of wine annually—not a cottage industry! Actually, on a volume basis we are the largest wine producing region outside of California. Finger Lakes wineries produce virtually every variety of grape and vintage, but you'll love our award winning sparkling wines, Rieslings, Pinot Noirs, Chardonnays and Ice Wines.
For visitors, nearly every winery offers tasting rooms, gift shops and extensive tours. Several offer restaurants and accommodations to fit a wide variety of budgets and tastes. Events and festivals throughout the year celebrate the harvest, the new vintages, and well, just plain celebrate. Touring the wineries can be anything you want it to be. An agri-tour for the family, good times with friends, a laid-back mini-course in good wine, or a more in-depth wine experience. Our wineries have something for everyone and every taste.
