October Activities Abound at The Corning Museum of Glass

Corning, NY (October 3, 2007) – From glass jack-o-lanterns to chemistry experiments, fun fall activities fill the rest of October at The Corning Museum of Glass.

2300: Glass Harvest – Thursday, October 18, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Enjoy the craziest, most inspired and colorful harvest celebration you’ve ever seen—with a bounty of live music, hot glassmaking, and great food and drink. The evening’s activities include:

  • Giant Glass Pumpkin-Making Demonstrations
  • Hot Glass Show Music by the Richmond Indigenous Gourd Orchestra
  • Music by The Horseflies
  • Complimentary hors d’oeuvres and soft drinks. Heartier fare is available for a small fee.

Families Explore: Mexico – Sunday, October 21, 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The following activities for Families Explore: Mexico are included in the price of Museum admission:

  • Prepare for the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which takes place the day after Halloween!
  • Explore objects in the Museum’s collection and learn more about the Mayan idea of “Woven Heaven, Tangled Earth” and the Mexican Tree of Life.
  • Make paper flowers, enamel on tiles, and learn some Spanish words.
  • Enjoy performances by children and families from the Corning Latino Association.

The Family Exploration series allows families to spend certain Sundays throughout the year exploring the various cultures from which many of the Museum’s glass objects originated. A different culture is featured each time.

Families who attend will receive a “passport,” which they can bring to subsequent Families Exploration events to receive stamps. Those who collect six stamps during the year will enjoy a special gift from the Museum’s GlassMarket.

Admission to the Museum is free for youth 17 and under; admission for accompanying adults is $12.50 each. Adults can register for the Museum’s “Free to Rediscover” program when they pay admission. The program allows them to return for free as often as they wish, until December 31, 2006.

Lunchtime Lecture: Jaime Harris – Wednesday, October 24, 12:00 p.m.
Bring a lunch and listen as Artist-in-Residence Jamie Harris presents his exploration of solid glassworking: making murrine in a “broad palette of muted colors” and using it to create “fused glass compositions, trying to develop a soft, hushed style.”

Ghosts in the Galleries – Saturday, October 27, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Kids of all ages will enjoy this night of scary fun!

  • Watch glassmakers create ghosts and pumpkins out of glowing, molten glass.
  • Show off scary, cute and creative costumes in a Costume Contest (5:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. in the Museum Auditorium).
  • Enjoy live music and scary snacks.
  • Tour the Haunted Galleries….if you dare!

Day: The Many Faces of Chemistry – Sunday, October 28, 11:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Discover how chemistry affects our lives by watching special experiments and demonstrations by members of the American Chemical Society.

  • Explore the interactive exhibits in the Innovation Center
  • Watch glass bend, stretch and break at a Magic of Glass show
  • Learn how everyday items in your house interact
  • Try some experiments yourself!

The Corning Museum of Glass (www.cmog.org) is home to the world’s most comprehensive and celebrated collection of glass, with more than 45,000 objects reflecting 3,500 years of glassmaking history. An independent, non-profit, educational institution, the Museum is dedicated to the art, history, science, research and exhibition of glass.
