Finger Lakes Events Calendar

Festivals, Happy Hour, Live Music, Theatre, and More!

It doesn’t matter what your interests are or who you’re in the Finger Lakes with, you can always find a great event to enrich your time in the region with those you care about.

Events take place all year round in the Finger Lakes region. From lakeside (and on the lake) events in the summer to harvest activities in the fall, snowmobiling or snowshoeing in the winter, and festivals in the springtime! Step inside a glassmaker’s studio to blow your own glass, stroll Main Street on a food tour, or gather for live music and theater performances. Browse the list of Finger Lakes events below or search the specific dates you will be visiting to see everything going on in the region.

Great Events that Happen Every Year

Below, you will find dozens of great events happening throughout the year with many of them happening annually. If you have memories of favorite annual Finger Lakes events from childhood such as cardboard boat regattas, hot air balloon festivals, cheese, apple or pumpkin festivals, to name a few, it’s likely that event that still takes place or, has likely improved your enjoyment. If you see a special event that piques your interest but can’t make it, click on the event anyway, it might be coming back next year!

Events Added Daily

Make sure to check back frequently to see if any other great events have been added. Events are added daily by businesses from every sector and interest so if there is nothing that sparks your interest now, there very well could be soon!

Redbud and dogwood bloom at Robert H. Treman State Park in Ithaca NY.
Paying it Forward in Parks

2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the New York State Park system, and we are celebrating it locally! Robert H. Treman State Park itself was opened to the public a century ago, and Buttermilk Falls State Park was established in 1924 as well.

The Friends of Robert H. Treman State Park (Tremanparkfriends.org) have worked with Finger Lakes State Parks education/interpretation staff to produce exhibits about state parks in Tompkins County and the Finger Lakes Region in the atrium of the Tompkins Center for History and Culture (tompkins-center.net) on the Ithaca Commons. Come on down and explore the displays and short videos, including a life-sized image of Robert H. Treman, benefactor and leader in the creation of our state parks in Tompkins County and throughout the region, as well as other local parks and preserves. We take a brief tour of the exhibits in this episode (#260) of Walk in the Park (Walkinthepark.tv)

Also on May 4, hundreds of volunteers across the state pitched in on “I Love My Park Day” to help prepare parks for this season and for generations to come. We go to Robert H. Treman State Park to see what was happening there, including interviews with Park Supervisor Cassie Lovelace, Park Manager Jim Brophy, and Finger Lakes State Park Regional Director Fred Bonn. I Love My Park Day is coordinated by Parks & Trails NY (ptny.org).

Walk in the Park is a non-commercial, public access, cable TV series shown on channel 13 in the Ithaca, NY area. Owl Gorge Productions (Owlgorge.com) produces Walk in the Park as a public service at PEGASYS Community Media Center (Pegasys.webstarts.com). Owl Gorge Productions is a Finger Lakes Tourism Alliance partner.

Finished stone wall at Hunt Country Vineyards
The Ancient Art of Dry Laid Stone with DJ Kitzel - MAY 2024

Date & Time:

Saturday, May 18 & Sunday, May 19, 2024:  9:00am-4:00pm

Registration:

$300 per person - Includes morning pastry, lunch, a glass of wine, & instruction, both days.
PRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED: No walk-ins. Space limited to 14 students.

We are so pleased to team up with DJ Kitzel for yet another season of stonemasonry workshops here at Hunt Country Vineyards.

DJ is  a natural instructor and sharer of talent, creativity, and skills.  A truly unique weekend workshop having fun learning from this talented stone mason, teacher, artist, and renaissance man.

A combination of some great outdoor learning, comradery & tinkering with ancient stones.  All accompanied by delicious locally catered lunches, outstanding Hunt Country wines, & gorgeous vineyard scenery.

Dry Laid Stone:

Dry-laid stonework is the ancient art of building with stone without the use of mortar.  Common in the United Kingdom and other parts of the world, it is becoming increasingly popular in North America in functional hardscapes.  This two-day course is designed to be a primer in the contemporary skills and applications of this timeless trade.  Currently, there are few dry-laid stone workers in the Finger Lakes and demand is growing.

This course will be a hands-on experience of dry-laid wall construction.  This class will build on skills learned in previous workshops.  Beginners are welcome, but this will be a more challenging build than in previous workshops, in terms of design and precision.  Students who complete the course will be able to build free-standing stone walls, retaining walls, foundations, walkways and stairs.  Hands-on learning will be mixed with direct instruction, discussion and working lunches.  Participants will learn the tools, techniques, materials and traditions of this accessible art form.

This portable skill set is in demand by landscapers and builders alike.  The trade requires few tools to get started.  Other benefits of dry-laid stonework include personal creativity, fitness, and a deep connection to an ancient human experience.

There will be a tent on site to protect participants from sun and rain.  All tools and materials will be provided.  Participants should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Sunscreen, sun hat and a water bottle are recommended. You are also welcome to bring safety glasses, work gloves and any personal tools.

Instructor:

D.J. Kitzel is a stonemason, certified English teacher, and licensed wilderness guide with 34+ years of experience in the building trades, including masonry.  He has worked on historic structures and new builds across Rochester and the Finger Lakes region while pursuing a life-long interest in these traditional trades.

Program:

Saturday morning will include introductions, course overview, expectations, and safety.  Getting right into the project by 10am and throughout Saturday and Sunday.  Instruction will be a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on work to construct a functional wall.  D.J. will provide instruction, all tools needed, and work songs.

Food:

BREAKFAST:
- There will be local pastry, coffee, and tea available upon your arrival both mornings.
- However, we encourage you to eat a hearty breakfast ahead of arrival, as you will be working hard all morning.

LUNCH:
- Locally catered lunches will be provided on Saturday and Sunday.

SNACKS, HYDRATION, & WINE:
- There are picnic items available to purchase in our tasting room, but please feel free to bring your own snacks if you feel you might need them before or after lunch.  Hard work can make a person more hungry than usual.
- Hydration is a requirement of hard work.  We will have hot coffee, tea, and cold mint water available to you all day.  Please bring a water bottle to refill throughout the day.  We also have refreshing beverage options for purchase in our tasting room.
- An end of day glass of wine is included in your registration fee.  Wine tastings, wines by the glass or bottle, and local beer are also available for purchase.

LIVE History In Time
LIVE History In Time

Historic Geneva welcomes touring theater company Live History to Rose Hill Mansion for the interactive theatrical experience In Time on Saturday, May 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Due to a mysterious nexus in time, four members of the Swan household have been ripped from the late 1800s to the present day. Each with their own goal, yet all share a common problem. They only have an hour to return to their own time, otherwise they risk being erased from history. To get back to their time, they need the help of Rose Hill visitors. The question remains will they be In Time?

This program has escape room, quest, and theatre elements. Visitors will explore the mansion with characters from Rose Hill’s history while collecting clues and completing tasks in this live-action scavenger hunt. Groups will leave every 30 minutes beginning at 11 a.m. The last group will leave at 5 p.m. The experience takes about an hour. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for students. Tickets can be purchased in advance at historicgeneva.org or at the door the day of the event. The Carriage House Gift Shop will also be open for the event.

Schumann A Major String Quartet, Op. 41 No. 3
Reena Esmail Saans
Suk Love Song
Franck Piano Quintet

From romantic passion to intense hatred, music is not only often inspired by, but also can elicit profound emotions. Robert Schumann’s Quartet in A Major, which opens with a sighing “Clara” motive in homage to his beloved bride, captures the composer’s affection, but also his extreme volatility. The soaring melodies of Reena Esmail’s Saans were composed as a wedding present for a friend—a celebration of love, but also testament to the deep relationship between friends. César Franck’s explosive Piano Quintet is a tumultuous expression of a range of emotions, which inspired not only numerous tales about the genesis and effect of the work, but also holds the listener in its impassioned thrall.

Brentano String Quartet
Brentano String Quartet

Geneva Music Festival 2024 Season: Light and Dark
Thursday, May 30, 7:30 PM
Brentano String Quartet

Mark Steinberg and Serena Canin, violins;
Misha Amory, viola;
Nina Lee, cello

Haydn String Quartet Op. 33 No. 5
Shostakovich String Quartet No. 8
Mendelssohn String Quartet in D Major, Op. 44/1

Join the Brentano Quartet, hailed by the New York Times for their “luxuriously warm sound [and] yearning lyricism” for a special concert celebrating musical contrasts. Revel in Joseph Haydn’s genial and energetic String Quartet in G Major, Op. 33, No. 5, which overwhelmingly brings warmth and light to mind. Darkness descends in the String Quartet No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 110 by Dmitri Shostakovich; its dedication (“In memory of the victims of fascism and war”), somber, sometimes grating harmonies, and musical allusions (incorporating, for instance, “Dies irae” from the Catholic requiem mass) capture the pain and sorrow felt by its composer. Hope dawns, though, and brightness reigns in Felix Mendelssohn’s spirited String Quartet in D major, Op. 44, No. 1.

All programs subject to change.

Beethoven Op. 76, “Harp”
Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2
Georges Antoines Piano Quartet

Music making can be a balm, offering respite among sorrow and strife, and giving artists a way of expressing their pain or reacting to their circumstances. In music, composers may celebrate victories, lament the loss of friends, or find the metaphorical harmony and peace that eludes the larger world. Join resident GMF artists for an exploration of three composers whose lives and works were shaped by their experience of conflict. Written during the Napoleonic wars, Beethoven’s “Harp” Quartet is a sparkling, lyrical reminder of joy, while Shostakovich’s Piano Trio, written as a memorial and replete with a danse macabre, dwells upon the tragic. Georges Antoine’s Piano Quartet, emerging from the trenches of World War I, is a passionate testament to a musical career cut short.
